Rome was not built in a day, so the saying goes. To the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), it will be another four years before it reaches its stated goal of becoming a regional community. That’s the target year when Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam are expected to have completed integrating their economies, harmonizing their political and security interests and enhancing their sociocultural linkages—the three interlocking pillars of their community.
