Indonesia’s new consumer class
THE number of Indonesians earning mid-scale incomes has grown rapidly in less than a decade. By applying the World Bank standard of US$2-20 daily expenditure, there are at least 130 million Indonesians under this classification. With increasingly higher incomes, their consumption patterns have changed: buying goods and services to meet their desires for quality entertainment, travel, education and health. How changed are the lives of people who have graduated to a higher income bracket? The following is our coverage of this extraordinary phenomenon.
