Muhammad Yamin: The Man Who Named The Jakarta Charter

HE was an ethnic Minang who was fascinated with Java and the greatness of the Majapahit Kingdom. He studied Javanese culture and mastered Sanskrit. He longed for an Indonesia greater than the kingdoms of the archipelago’s past. He held the idea that Indonesia’s territory should encompass the Malaya Peninsula, North Kalimantan, Portuguese Timor, Irian (today renamed Papua) and Papua New Guinea. He dreamed of an Indonesian unity greater than ever imagined by Hatta or Sjahrir.
