Whose New Iraq?
TWO weeks after the fall of Baghdad, the top concerns are maintaining the peace and rebuilding Iraq. Lootings have declined along with the return of members of the police force. Meetings to discuss Iraq's future were also held in several places, and thousands of Iraqis have demonstrated demanding the right to self-government. At the same time, the interests of the major powers are increasingly evident. The US has requested that the UN lift the economic sanctions against Iraq, while a number of its companies have been awarded contracts to rebuild Iraq. It has become apparent that the US invasion aims to control the country's economic assets.
