In August 2003 a group of businessmen visited senior officials at the Department of Agriculture. They warned that Indonesia was under threat from the avian influenza virus that has swept the Asian region. Unfortunately, their report did not receive serious attention. Three months later, the avian flu epidemic has struck Indonesia killing millions of chickens, triggering material losses of Rp7.7 trillion and threatening the livelihoods of millions more people. Now we must pay a heavy toll for being slow in tackling the problem.
