Jakarta Floods : The Blame Game
EXACTLY five years after the January 2002 floods, water once again inundated parts of Jakarta, Bekasi and Tangerang. The year’s flood was much worse than the deluge of 2002. In Kampung Melayu the depth of water reached 7 meters. Not to mention the loss of lives and damaged infrastructure. The government estimates that losses reached Rp4.1 trillion, while some NGOs predict Rp7.3 trillion. Why are this year’s floods so much worse than before? What has the Jakarta Governor done about it?
