FOUR members of the Joint Security Committee (JSC) - the body that was tasked with supervising the peace in Aceh - from the Free Aceh Movement, or GAM, were arrested as they were about to leave Aceh. The reason: members of the JSC are not allowed to leave Aceh without first informing the authorities. The arrests have since created a new tension in the conflict in Aceh. It appears that there is no more hope to salvage the peace in Aceh. Although the government and the GAM have stated that they are ready to proceed with the negotiations, violence continues to flare. The government has since indicated that it would take steps to eliminate the GAM. The decision is only waiting for the signature of President Megawati.
