ENTERING the second week of the military operation conducted by the Indonesian Military (TNI) in Aceh, the number of civilian casualties continues to rise. One of the most tragic incidents happened in Peusangan, Bireuen. Foreign news agencies reported that the TNI shot dead seven civilian residents of the village. The TNI insists that they were members of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). The number of civilians killed may continue to increase as the military operation progresses. Aside from that, the number of "victims" since martial law was imposed in Aceh is not restricted to that province, but has since spread to Jakarta.
