AT the age of 29, he was appointed Supreme Commander of the People’s Defense Army. Living on one lung, he sneaked in and out towns and jungles, waging guerrilla war against Dutch and Allied forces. The general attack on Yogyakarta, which he strategized with Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX, convinced the world that the Republic of Indonesia was still standing. There are not many generals like him, who lived simply and dedicated his life to the republic. Tempo retraces the steps of this historical figure who is recognized today as the founding father of the TNI, the Indonesian Military.
