THE rupiah tumbled to almost Rp 12,000 to the US dollar, the worst ever fall in the last 10 years. A similar rupiah free-fall triggered the 1998 economic crisis. The government and the central bank are working franticly to keep the rupiah stable. The situation is keeping President Yudhoyono extremely busy. He summoned the economic ministers, Bank Indonesia Governor, presidential advisory board, president’s task force for reforms and programs management, entrepreneurs, as well as economists to help prevent the rupiah from falling any further.
