PRESIDENT Yudhoyono fi nally issued a Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perpu) to recruit three new leaders for the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). The regulation was made after two KPK chairmen, Chandra Hamzah and Bibit Samad Riyanto, were relieved from active duty for alleged criminal acts. A so-called Team of Five, comprising senior legal and security professionals, is tasked with fi nding the three new candidates. But the new Perpu is seen by some as a form of government intervention in the KPK’s independence. What will become of those nominated if later the legislature rejects the President’s move?
