THE name of Sarwo Edhie Wibowo, alongside Suharto’s, rocketed to prominence after the political upheaval of 1965. As commander of the Army Para-Commando Regiment or RPKAD, Colonel Sarwo Edhie spearheaded the operations that would annihilate the PKI, the Indonesian Communist Party. Yet among student activists in Jakarta, Sarwo is remembered as a hero, for his other less well-known humanitarian activities. He was later sidelined from the national political stage, and for the remainder of his life, Sarwo Edhie was never again seen in Suharto’s power circles.
