THE Bank Century case enters a new phase. Its former owner, Rafat Ali Rizvi, is suing the Indonesian government in international arbitration court. He contends the government’s Rp6.7 trillion bailout of the bank at the end of 2008 caused him harm and he has asked that his assets be unfrozen. Rafat’s action is supported by another former owner of Bank Century, Hesham al-Warraq. Inevitably, this new development will become a major political issue. Golkar legislator Bambang Soesatyo is already saying that the government will lose the arbitration. Is it true this is nothing more than Golkar’s preemptive political tactic prior to the cabinet reshuffl e in October?
