Australia's wiretapping activities in Indonesia raise questions on the government’s capacity to secure classifi ed information. In August 1996, when East Timor began to break away, Australian intelligence bribed an Indonesian offi cial to obtain information. Other countries besides Australia with no military pacts, also tried to listen in on information from Indonesian offi cials in and outside the country.
