Questioning Quotas Again: Will the Government ever learn to manage the rising demand for beef on Ramadan and eliminate suspicious bartering of import quotas?
It’s that time of the year when soaring beef prices cause the government to panic and carry out ad hoc policies, like reissuing once-banned import licenses to private trading companies. Nothing wrong with this except that it sets off an unhealthy and graft-ridden race to get the best quotas in order to get the most money. Some importers are even rumored to be backed by politicians, conglomerates and even the intelligence apparatus.
