Breaking From Cliches From Tirang to the Sumbawa Valley This year has been a good year for Indonesian cinema, with many films winning awards at prestigious film festivals and receiving warm welcome from critics across the globe. We have also seen a phenomenal horror film that has broken the genre’s cliches and been watched by over four million viewers. Young filmmakers are pushing boundaries, producing films outside the mainstream, from the realist to the surreal. Since 2011, Tempo has been in the tradition of choosing each year’s best films and supporting categories. This year, for the first time, we have taken these awards on stage in the Tempo Film Festival to show our appreciation for those who have added color to Indonesian cinema.
