Stuck In The Mud
THE heat of the Lapindo hot mud is once again being felt in the cabinet. The Bakrie family recently sold Lapindo to James Belcher, a US businessman and long-time acquaintance of Coordinating Minister for People\\\'s Welfare Aburizal Bakrie. Aburizal and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati have been at odds over the issue. Bakrie presented several legal reasons in selling Lapindo, yet head of the Capital Market Supervisory Agency, Fuad Rahmany, dismissed all Bakrie\\\'s arguments. With Lapindo under new ownership, concerns have arisen that fund assistance from the Bakrie family to pay the disaster management costs would dry up. Tempo maps out the story behind these differences.
